We have created a Day Labor Program that connects over 100 immigrant day laborers each month with employers. In some cases these have resulted in permanent jobs. We have stressed to them that we are not simply interested in their survival; we are interested in promoting their ability to get ahead in life, whether they stay here or return to their country of origin.

As a result, we have created a real sense community, trust, mutual support and accountability among these formerly disconnected individuals who had been in competition with each other; and ways for them to connect and participate in the community as a whole. Here is one important indicator of the impact of our program: our Day Labor Program members started and manage their own Emergency Fund (Fondo de Emergencia), to assist members who have been injured on the job while they recuperate. Building on our successes, we are in the process of creating a Leadership Team among 7 of our members, by adapting the Incentive System developed by the Family Independence Initiative.

In 2005, we will create a new program geared to developing work connections and business opportunities for women in the community.
