Day Labor Program

The Chavez Center’s Day Labor Program involves a combination of four services to support laborers in gaining short-term employment and developing basic skills, including:

Job Connections – Facilitates job connections in general labor, landscaping, carpentry, painting, janitorial, and other work.
Civic Integration – Provides access to community services and resources, such as health care, public safety, immigration, and financial basics.
Skills Training –Utilizes both qualified members and outside professionals to provide training in specific trade skills to increase employability.
Leadership Development – Builds economic potential by providing leadership development training and opportunities to workers.

 

Technology & Literacy Program

The Chavez Center’s Technology and Literacy Program comprises a combination of three services to support low-income residents in developing basic computer and language skills that enhance employability, including:

Technology Empowerment – Bridges the digital divide that exists in low income communities and provides professional training in computer applications utilized by today’s workforce.
Computer Repair – Now in the planning stages; foresees new opportunities in employment, mall business start-up, or cooperative formation.
Plaza Comunitaria Spanish Literacy Classes – Provides Spanish literacy classes to increase personal, social and workforce potential.
English Literacy Classes – Provides English classes and mentoring that aid significantly in life and especially in employment.

 

Economic Development

The Chavez Center’s Economic Development Program consists of three far reaching initiatives that facilitate detailed planning and training that help residents launch small businesses or worker-owned cooperatives, including:

Cooperative Development – Builds new skills and opportunities for workers trained and committed to work together in a variety of areas. Our first worker-owned cooperative, Green & Clean Professional Housecleaning Services, was launched in May 2009 and provides high quality, eco-friendly housecleaning.
Business Development – Offers finanacial and management education in English & Spanish, as well as networking to new startups and existing business.
Community Partnerships – Provides employment opportunities through collaboration and networking with businesses, government agencies and non-profit organizations. This initiative intends to creat a "one-stop" setting that offers residents a variety of services focusing on equitabe and sustainable economic development.
